Federal Research Fisheries Biologist (ZP-III)

The Recruitment Processes Program of the RACE Division, Alaska Fisheries Science Center, NOAA-Fisheries is looking for qualified candidates to conduct independent scientific research that examines climate-ichthyoplankton-upper trophic interactions across spatial and temporal scales in all of Alaska’s Large Marine Ecosystems. The successful candidate will join a strong ichthyoplankton team that conducts field and laboratory researchon marine ichthyoplankton ecology in the North Pacific and Arctic, and will work collaboratively with physical oceanographers, biological oceanographers, and fisheries biologists to apply results to Integrated Ecosystem Assessments and Ecosystem-Based Fishery Management practices.  The incumbent should have a robust quantitative background and will work with other ichthyoplankton ecologists to 1) design new approaches to analyze marine larval fish data and examine relationships to climate, 2) determine the mechanisms that relate physical oceanography, zooplankton and ichthyoplankton, 3) effectively communicate results to management, the scientific community, and the public.

The incumbent must have technical knowledge of ichthyoplankton taxonomy and egg and larval identification (including sorting, measuring, imaging, developmental staging, radiographing, and clearing and staining). The successful candidate will identify marine fish eggs and larvae from the North Pacific, verify identifications, and manage taxonomic and systematic samples and data including indexing, error-checking, quality control, and quality assurance.  The successful candidate will work with local Data Managers to upload data to relevant relational databases and web portals.

The incumbent will join a large, interdisciplinary field research program and must be able to go to sea for up to 60 days per year.  The incumbent will serve as a member of the scientific party, Watch Chief, or Chief Scientist on NOAA, UNOLS, or chartered vessels as appropriate.

The position is located in Seattle, WA USA at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center.  The Recruitment Process Program is part of NOAA’s Ecosystems and Fisheries Oceanography Coordinated Investigations Program (EcoFOCI; http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/foci/) an interdisciplinary program that conducts research on climate, physical and biological oceanographic factors that affect fisheries recruitment in Alaskan waters.
